Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord?

Psalm 24:3-4 (NKJV)
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
Or who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.

Two questions please;

1. Any Puritan writings or other content on these verses?

2. Verse 4 - what is the meaning of the Hebrew "who has not lifted up his soul unto vanity/ to an idol/ to what is false" (KJV/ NKJV/ ESV)? Or perhaps simply which do you think is the best translation?

I do not know specific works that are based on that text, but here is a list using Puritan Search of the Puritan texts that contain these verses. Various formula of the verses were used, so keep that in mind if looking up on EEBO-TCP, which all of these works are offered at, i.e. Psal. 24.3, Psalm 24.3, Psal. 24. 3, Psalm. 24. 3, etc. I am sure I have not exhausted all the options, but maybe this will help. :agree: I really liked the Michael Morales book. He's not Puritan but gives a solid Biblical theological approach.

Psalm 24:3-4 (NKJV)
3 Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
Or who may stand in His holy place?
4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to an idol,
Nor sworn deceitfully.

Spurgeon's Treasury of David always has extracts from good writers. That would be a reasonable place to start (scroll down to "Explanatory Notes and Quaint Sayings" if you want to skip Spurgeon's own words):

"To vanity (worthlessness)" or "to falsehood (deceit)" are the basic translation. That concept might be used as a metonymy for idols because false gods are deceitful and useless.

There are several places where the term likely refers to idols, inasmuch as they are ineffective and therefore false. The phrase הַבְלֵי־שָׁוְא, worthless idols (Ps 31:6 [7]; Jon 2:8 [9]), joins two nearly synonymous terms in constr. to stress the complete loathsomeness of idolatry (VanGemeren). Also likely is Jer 18:15, in which the Lord condemns those who have forgotten him, but who burn incense “to idols” (לַשָּׁוְא). Perhaps also to be included is Ps 24:4, which the NIV translates, “who does not lift up his soul to an idol (שָׁוְא) or swear by what is false.” The parallelism between שָׁוְא and מִרְמָה, deceit, treachery (#5327), a term that is not used in contexts having to do with idols, makes it more likely that the verse simply refers to issues of basic integrity. Other places where it has been suggested that the word refers to idols (Ps 26:4; 119:37; Isa 1:13; Job 31:5; see Dahood) are less likely.

Willem VanGemeren, ed., New International Dictionary of Old Testament Theology & Exegesis (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Publishing House, 1997), 54–55.

What Ruben said. It is plausible that the last part of the verse contains a similar metonymy, "does not swear by what is deceitful" (cf NIV "swear by a false god"), though as VanGemeren points out, there aren't the obvious parallels for mirmah that there are for shav'.
