Pope Francis claims that a committed atheist was saved

This is truly sad to see. If what Francis says is true that renders the need of the gospel Romans 10:17; 1st Corinthians 15 and Christ death as not needed. Not to mention Jesus' own statements of being the way and narrow gate John 14:6; Matthew 7:14. This boy is being given a false hope and sense of security. Francis words echo to me the statement of Isaiah:

"According to the law and testimony if they speak not according to this word it is because there is no light in them"-Isaiah 8:20.

I'm having an ongoing conversation with my Roman Catholic friend about this. It's been interesting. Basically, what's being taught here is a good-works universalism.

The consequences of this idea that a person can be saved without Jesus are similar to those of Pelagianism. Christianity becomes needless. It's of course a dramatic shift from the former teachings of the Romanists.

It has to be pointed out that no Roman Catholic would say that a person is saved without Jesus. They believe that in some mystical sense Jesus is doing good works through them. Of course, this defeats the purpose of evangelism and completely throws away any doctrine of repentance and turning to God. I ask, "How, if God is working in them, do they continue to fail to acknowledge him, and even plainly deny him?"

It's frustrating to me because the whole issue is just riddled with inconsistencies. Any honest Catholic should see that.

This statement is a little controversal but it gves an idea of what the Reformers and Puritans thought of the Pope "There is no other head of the Church, but the Lord Jesus Christ; nor can the Pope of Rome, in any sense, be head thereof; but is that Antichrist, that man of sin, and son of perdition, that exalteth himself, in the Church, against Christ and all that is called God." WCF 25:6
