"Lead us not into temptation..."

David's despairing flight into Philistia occasions other temptations, the temptation to lie, and to fight for Philistia against Israel!

"How Saul, who was forsaken of God, when he was in a strait was more and more perplexed and embarrassed with his own counsels, we read in the foregoing chapter. In this chapter we find how David, who kept close to God, when he was in a strait was extricated and brought off by the providence of God, without any contrivance of his own." -Matthew Henry

The goodness of God's overruling providence...

David has sinned his way into a jam, but God delivers him, and just in time so that he can deliver Ziklag.

Always better than what we deserve...

If we set our hearts on earthly things (here today, gone tomorrow), we set ourselves up for frustration. But, if our goal is to glorify God and love the people around us, that can be done under any circumstances (in a king's place or a prison), and cannot be taken away.

Sooner or later, hardship comes to us all.

David provides a model of how to bear such with Christian fortitude and faith.

Poole takes us to Ziklag...

God chastens David, but does not destroy...and He opens the door for David to recover all that was lost at Ziklag.

Behold, the kindness of our God...

In the division of the spoils, David's wisdom, justice, charity, and benevolence are on full display!

The sun sets on Saul's kingship, as he dies by his own hand before a victorious Philistine army.

Poole outlines this instructive, if melancholy, chapter...
