Union of Utrecht

On January 23, 1579, the Union of Utrecht was signed by six provinces of the Hapsburg Netherlands, thus forming the Protestant Dutch Republic. This political-military-religious alliance was formed in oppostion to the Spanish-Roman Catholic of the Low Countries. It lead to the Dutch Declaration of Independence two years later. It was a major step forward in the Protestant European march towards civil and religious liberty.
