Two Luther Questions

Was his language crude by the standards of his time?

Do others also speak like him during this time period? Is it a 16th Cty German thing?

They were posted in another thread because of "doss" but I'd still like know if Luther was speaking in the common vernacular and what the other Reformers thought of his language.

I sure don't hear the other Reformers being as uncouth as Luther.

Luther was pretty crass at times, but in fairness to him you have to remember that he got very tired of having to repeat his points to his opponents (like Erasmus) who would not listen to the sense (both Scriptural and logical) of his arguments. He could have a hot temper at times as well.

It's interesting to note that this is one of the reasons why Luther was considered to be anti-Semitic by his critics, because of his sharp language against the Jews. But what is often ignored is that Luther reserved the same language for the higher ups in the Catholic church and also for the Anabaptists as well. He was an equal opportunity name-caller

One more question...did the other Reformers speak out against his use of bathroom language and humour?
