How reliable is Philip Schaff's writings on Christian Church History? (as part of the answer, would you say it is worth studying) if this is not reliable, what books or resources are?

I would suggest reading The Antidote to the Poison of Popery, by J. J. Janeway. His book examines the historical claims of Schaf and J.W. Nevin.
