Lord’s Day Sermons — 10/29/23

This morning our preacher spoke on Eph. 1:11. The primary focus of his sermon was on the phrase "In whom we have obtained an inheritance". He stated that he would prefer a different translation of the verb here as, in the Greek, it's in the passive voice (I haven't yet done my Berean duty by confirming in my GNT). He said that a better translation would be "In whom we have been appointed/allotted an inheritance" and that the language used harkens back to the OT notion of casting lots and is designed to emphasize God's sovereignty in the whole process of our election. He cited passages such as Ps. 33:12 and several others (which sadly I did not jot down due to the necessity of constraining a wiggly toddler) and spoke about how God chooses us and not the other way around.

So I guess it was a one-point sermon. But it was a good point!

The morning service was on Acts 20:17-38 and the evening service was on Hebrews 4:14-5:10.

Our executive pastor preached on Col. 3:1-11 this morning, focusing on the new life of the Christian and the killing of sin, specifically the sexual sins that Paul outlines in Col. 3:5.

We had ordination of new office bearers in the morning and I preached on Micah 6:8, "God's Recipe for Reformation." In the afternoon I preached on Lord's Day 32 of the Heidelberg Catechism, "Created in Christ Jesus for Good Works."
