Puritan Board Freshman
In my perusing through PB posts, I stumbled upon threads in the past that were dedicated to sharing what we heard preached at our Lord’s Day service today, and was greatly edified by them. I want to continue that here, so please share what you heard preached this Sunday and what you took away from it.

I am back at college now, so I am back at Mount Calvary Church (the nondenominational church I attend at school; pastors are Calvinistic in their theology). My pastor finished his summer series on the Lord’s Prayer today, covering the last petition in Matt. 6:13 (“and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil”; 6:13a for you KJV folks). I thought this was one of the most powerful sermons I’ve heard at this church and was greatly encouraged by it. He broke down 1) why we don’t normally pray this petition, 2) why we should, 3) how we pray it, and 4) how it is answered by God. Exhorted us to pray earnestly and specifically for those particular besetting sins we struggle with, and challenged us to practice “suffocating our sin” through the power of the Spirit in prayer and through the Word. It was much-needed at a time where I desperately want to see myself growing more than I am in holiness.

We were in the end of Deuteronomy 23, into 24, learning about how the Lord desires to uphold the dignity of the poor and needy, and makes specific provisions in the law to ensure that they have their basic needs met.

Think of the owners of the vineyards and landowners in the midst of Israel.

When thou cuttest down thine harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou shalt not go again to fetch it: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow: that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands. When thou beatest thine olive tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. When thou gatherest the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it afterward: it shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in the land of Egypt: therefore I command thee to do this thing.

Deuteronomy 24:19-22

John 10:6-18. The Good Shepherd's love for His sheep, you and I, is intrinsically bound up in the Father's love for the Son. Unbreakable, immutable, unfailing love. From before the foundation of the world. Ephesians 1:3-6 How ineffably sublime!

The Gospel from Proverbs 17:15. God's expectations for earthly judges, proven from nature and Scripture. How God is a just judge. How all men will stand before Him and be judged. Why we need a covenant representative to take our punishment for sin. Judgment falling on Christ. Receiving by faith alone. What that means. Errors concerning nature of faith. Why Reformed Christians must be careful to remember the Gospel. Exhortation for unconverted to believe on Him.

AM (English) - Mark 14:66-72. Christ's word prevailed; he showed himself to be the faithful and trustworthy one, in contrast to Peter who denied him.

PM (Spanish) - Matthew 8:1-4. The healed leper reveals the power, willingness, and undefilable deity of Christ.

AM service: Finished the book of Haggai 2:20-23, with a theme of how the LORD works in the day of small things to do great things for his glory. Very encouraging message, ending a mini-series of surveying some minor prophets after a series on Daniel.

PM service: We did a Psalm sing at our evening service time, for the first time since I've been at our church. This was a great time of singing around a dozen Bible Songs. Our pastor gave a brief devotion using Colossians 3:15-17 as the starting place on the reasons for singing Psalms. We're going back to the Gospel of John for the regular evening sermon series next week.

Sabbath School: The Incommunicable Attributes of God, primarily addressing the qualitative infinity of God.

AM Service: Haggai 2:10-19, discussing how in the context of the Law holiness was not transferable but uncleanness was. A message about how we are to worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness and what that means. This message was the third from Haggai, addressed to the priests.

PM Service: Haggai 2:20-23 about the fourth message from Haggai, addressed to Zerubbabel the governor on the same day (the 24th). This message was about God’s intervention and instruments. His intervention is certain, constant and comprehensive. His instruments ought to be sealed and set apart.

I thought so, too! That’s why I chimed in! It caught my eye. It was a wonderful sermon from Mr. Greer who is visiting us from Whitefield College of the Bible in Northern Ireland. Here’s the link:

Adult Bible Class: Arius vs. Athanasius, focusing on a Biblical view of the Trinity.

AM: James 4:13-17 on the sins of presumption, pretentiousness, and perversion of justice, and our need for resting in the sanctuary of God's providence

PM: Genesis 10:1-32 on the seed of Noah, their spread, settlement, sin, and splendour, along with a reminder from elsewhere in the Bible that all of the resulting nations have one Saviour on which to call.
