For anyone who might have an interest, I ran across, whilst perusing a theological library, this work: John Selden: A Life in Scholarship by G. J. Toomer; 2 volumes (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2009). Selden (1584-1654) was an English polymath and prolific author who participated in and wrote about politics and law. He also wrote about many other subjects, including Jewish law (about which he wrote extensively, apparently) and even Arabic studies. John Milton, no slouch himself, hailed him as one of the most learned men in England.
I haven't read a line of either volume, so I can pass no opinion, much less a judgment. I'm merely letting those folks who might be interested know about them.
I've done this, of course, because I'm a totally nice guy and a wonderful person.
