John Hicks (or Hickes), English Puritan, was born in 1633 and died in 1685. He was ejected from his pulpit for nonconformity in 1662 (when asked how he expected to provide for himself and his family he answered, "Should I have as many children as that hen has chickens, (pointing to one that had a good number of them) I should not question but God would provide for them all"). He had several discourses with King Charles II concerning the treatment of Dissenters. He was among the signers of the 1673 Puritan Preface to the Scottish Metrical Psalter. He wrote A sad Narrative of the Pression of many honest People in Devon, etc.; A Discourse of the Excellency of the heavenly Substance; and his last speech is memorialized in William Turner's History of Remarkable Providences.
