"Nor will they abstain from their jeers when told that little more than five thousand years have elapsed since the creation of the world. For they will ask, Why did the power of God slumber so long in idleness?" Institutes 3.21.4

To what or whom was Calvin referring? Besides the reason Calvin listed, were there other reasons given by people (not necessarily the same one's Calvin had in mind here) who mocked this view?
 
Augustine also mentions the cavil in his "Confessions" of, What was God doing for all that time before He created the world? His answer is that there was no time before the creation of the world.
