With the debate raging over subscription in conservative Presbyterian circles, I have looked a little at Presbyterian history. The majority of Cumberland Presbyterians reunited with the old main stream northern Presbyterian Church USA at the beginning of the 20th Century. The standards were watered down to accomadate them. Was this accomadationism really designed to bring the Amyraldian wing of the Cumberland Presbyterians back in union with the main stream of Presbyterianism; or was it an attempt to lower the standards because so many Elders in the main stream Presbyterian Church already could not subscribe in good faith?
